Geology

Kyanite is an aluminosilicate mineral formed mostly from the metamorphism of sedimentary rocks. Because of this, it is often found in mountain ranges where extreme metamorphism has taken place.

It is most commonly blue, but is often seen in green or black as well. Less commonly it can be found as clear, purple, or even orange. It gets its blue color from titanium & iron impurities. With no impurities, kyanite crystals would be colorless.

Some pieces of kyanite even have a color changing effect, where they are different colors in different lighting.

Kyanite is a part of the triclinic crystal system and is usually found in blades with a splintery fracture and a pearly luster. Polished, high quality kyanite often shows chatoyancy, or a cat’s eye effect.

There’s a lot of geologically interesting things about kyanite, one of which is that the hardness varies depending on where you test it. If you test the hardness parallel to the length of the crystal, it’s a 4.5-5 out of 10. If you test it perpendicular to the length of the crystal, the hardness is 6.5-7. Another name given to kyanite is “disthene” which means “two strengths” to describe this unusual property. Directional hardness is caused when the strength of the atomic bonds within the crystal structure are not equal in all directions.

Kyanite has two polymorphs, which are minerals with the same chemical composition but different crystal structures. These minerals are andalusite and sillimanite. Different minerals will form from the same elements under differing temperature and pressure conditions. Kyanite forms at high pressure, sillimanite forms at high temperature, and andalusite forms at low pressure.  Seeing one of these minerals in a metamorphic rock gives interesting information as to what kind of conditions the rock has been through.

Because of its resistance to heat, kyanite is used for many industrial purposes to create heat resistant materials.

Kyanite is often found in combination with ruby or garnet, since these minerals are also formed from metamorphism. It is found alongside many other minerals as well such as quartz, micas, pyrite.

Localities

Kyanite is found all across the world, but most commonly India, Brazil, Nepal, United States, Switzerland, Argentina & more.

Safety & care

There’s always a lot of conflicting information when it comes to the safety of crystals, especially when it comes to water safety. Kyanite is pretty water safe for a quick period of time, but I wouldn’t leave it soaking as it can damage and crack the stone, or cause it to rust. Never drink water that crystals have been soaking in, as they may release harmful elements that you don’t want to be ingesting. Kyanite can be extremely dangerous if you inhale its crystal dust, but the same goes for every other mineral. Always take proper precautions when doing any lapidary work. Kyanite is safe to be left in the sun for short periods of time. Extended exposure, like weeks on end, may cause the color to fade.

Metaphysical Properties

Kyanite is mostly associated with the throat and third eye chakras, but its energy can help bring all chakras into alignment. Kyanite is great for increasing psychic abilities, enhancing meditation, and communication both physically and spiritually. Blue kyanite helps us to speak our personal truth and to feel heard by those we communicate with. Kyanite carries a strong vibration that is great for dissolving energetic blockages. Kyanite connects the physical realm to the spiritual realm, allowing the energy between them to flow.

Kyanite embodies yin & yang energies and balance. It brings peace & relaxation, but also gets your life force energy flowing. Kyanite is all about balance in all aspects of life. Working with kyanite can help balance your emotions and bring you back to equilibrium if you’re feeling too high or low.

Kyanite is a great stone to sleep with, as it can help you receive messages from the universe and improves dream recall. It is the perfect stone for connecting with higher realms & your higher self. It can also bring about lucid dreaming or astral projection.

Kyanite promotes logical thinking that helps you to overcome a victim mindset and regain control of your life. It’s a great stone for when you’re feeling overwhelmed by life, as it soothes anxiety & stress. It encourages self-reflection and personal growth. Kyanite helps us gain knowledge and understanding of ourselves & others. Working with kyanite can help you become more open-minded and receptive to new ideas and perspectives. It is great for creativity & problem solving. It allows us to release control and go with the flow.

Kyanite is similar to selenite where it doesn’t need to be cleansed, it doesn’t retain any negative energy!
While kyanite has many spiritual benefits, it is also great for boosting overall physical health.
