Geology
Kammererite was discovered in 1841 and was named after August Alexander Kämmerer, a famous chemist and mining director in Russia.
Kammererite is a rare silicate mineral that is a variety of clinochlore. Clinochlore is apart of the chlorite group, which is a subgroup of silicates. Clinochlore is a phyllosilicate mineral, meaning the silica tetrahedra in the crystal structure is arranged in sheets.
Kammererite is known for its unique pink/purple color that it gets from chromium. There are other varieties of clinochlore that look quite different, one of them being seraphinite!
Kammererite crystals have a hardness of only 2-2.5 out of 10 on the Moh’s scale of hardness. Not only does it have a very low hardness, but kammererite crystals have perfect cleavage and break apart easily in sheets.
Most kammererite on the market is found in combination with other minerals such as chromium-rich spinel, diopside, amphibole, magnesite, chlorite, tremolite, and green garnet uvarovite. It is often claimed that the green material found with kammererite is serpentine, but testing has not shown that to be true! If you see a piece of kammererite with a vibrant green, this isn’t fake or dyed! It is likely uvarovite garnet.
Kammererite is often found alongside chromite ore. It is formed in cracks in ultramafic (low silica content) rocks through hydrothermal alteration of surrounding rocks. During this process, minerals like amphibole, biotite, and pyroxene are transformed into clinochlores.
While kammererite can form large, beautiful crystals, it can also have a massive crystal habit meaning the crystals themselves are too small to be seen with the eye and it appears more as a rock. Clinochlores are apart of the monoclinic crystal system, although their crystals can appear pseudohexagonal. This means they look like hexagons, even though they are not apart of the hexagonal system.
Localities
Kammererite is found in a couple locations across the world in chromite deposits, but the highest quality pieces with the largest crystals come from Turkey. Some other locations are Norway, Austria, Russia, India, US, Australia, China, Japan, and more.
Safety & care
Even though kammererite has a low hardness of only 2-2.5, the material on the market is usually found in combination with other minerals that makes it a little more sturdy overall. When it comes to raw kammererite with visible crystals, it’s best to keep it somewhere safe where it can’t be scratched or broken. Kammererite is safe in the sun but it is not recommended to be left in water.

Crystals to pair with kammererite
Kammererite does well with many different types of energies, mostly other high vibrational, crown chakra aligned crystals but also heart chakra stones & more grounding stones to balance its high energy.
-
Kammererite + seraphinite: similar minerals and minerals that form together usually work well together energetically! Kammererite & seraphinite are similar in that they connect the physical & spiritual realms. Together they connect to the heart chakra and allow for emotional healing, empathy & connection to higher realms.
-
Kammererite + apophyllite: spiritual connection, intuition & psychic abilities
